A major upgrade to the iconic GMT Master pilot's watch came in 2006 with the 6-digit GMT Master II ref. 116713. Most innovative was the use of a ceramic material (Cerachrom) for the bezel.

Reference 116713LN has a striking two-tone finish using 904L stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold. One of the most impressive features is the independent 24-hour hand, offered in a cool green hue. Because the 24-hour hand can be adjusted without disturbing the other hands on the dial, the GMT Master II can track three time zones simultaneously. The watch features an automatic movement, the "Super Oyster Case" with the "Maxi Dial": the 40mm case has wider lugs and the dial has larger luminescent hour markers and hands.

Rolex created the first Oyster Perpetual GMT watch in the 1950s for Pan Am pilots who wanted a quick way to read the time in different time zones. The classic design underwent several refinements over the years. The GMT Master II was an important addition to the GMT Master line.
