The history of the GMT-Master II begins with ref 16760 in 1983. It is the first GMT-Master with the 'Coke' bezel, sapphire crystal and quickset GMT function. As a result, the new GMT-Master II was capable of tracking three time zones simultaneously instead of the original dual-timezone function. As the complexity of the movement increased, so did the size of the case. The GMT-Master II is thicker than its predecessor and also has a wider bezel and larger crown guards. These visual features quickly earned the ref. 16760 the nickname "Fat Lady" or the more appropriate nickname "Sophia Loren" (after the famous Italian actress with curves). Production of this reference ceased in 1988.
